Fighting Words

A Boxing Champion

You probably thought this was going to be about Manny Pacquiao or another champ currently in the upper echelons of boxing. If so, let me have you take two steps back and turn your head in another direction. The champions I am referring too are those on the local Chicago boxing scene that are making a difference by introducing people to the sport and helping the next generation to discover that boxing can teach them other great life skills and lessons.
Recently, I spoke with Eddie Davis at Davis Square Park in Chicago. Introducing myself as a fan of boxing from Cuerus Newspaper, he was more than eager to talk about the recent show held October 7, 2010 at the park and his feelings about teaching the kids boxing skills. It was obvious that he has a love for boxing that has led him to the path of being a coach in Chicago's Back of the Yards community. More importantly, though, he stresses that the kids can apply the discipline, determination and focus taught and honed from their boxing training in other areas of life. Eddie explained that if the kids utilize these postive aspects towards staying in school, being better students, in the job environment and elsewhere, then good lessons have been learned. The show provided an opportunity for his group to demonstrate their skills in the ring for their neighbors and boxing fans in the area.

Eddie also told me that he feels totally accepted by the community there. The families know that he is doing great things for their kids and is really trying to make a difference one jab at a time. He was grateful to have a job that allows him to really contribute something positive to society and provide an alternative set of lessons to not only help kids in the area of learning a sport that teaches so many positive things - by not only providing them with the ability to defend themselves - but also to show them that they are appreciated as human beings. He hopes to give them a different path to go down through discipline and focus.
